Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

What is it?

MFA is an additional verification process during the login process to prove who you are.

A factor in authentication is a way of confirming your identity when you try to sign in. For example, a password is one kind of factor, it's a thing you know. The three most common kinds of factors are:

  • Something you know - Like a password, or a memorized PIN.
  • Something you have - Like a smartphone, or a secure USB key.

Why is it important?

What is sensitive data?

  • Personal identifiable information (PII)
  • Federal Educational Rights and Privacy (FERPA)
  • Payment card industry compliance (PCI)
  • Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)

Data Protection

It is preferred that you do not send sensitive data.  If you must send it, then make sure you type "Encrypt" in the subject line or body.

Encryption scrambles the data, dramatically reducing the likelihood that someone can read your messages, even if they intercept the data.
