Issue
Staff or student receives an error when trying to access Outlook (Email) in a web browser.
The page displays “Something went wrong” and may show an error code similar to 503 with a Refresh the application button.
Environment
- Applies to students and staff
- Accessing Outlook Web Email
- Using a web browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari)
- Any device (Chromebook, Windows, Mac)
Resolution
Try the steps below in order.

Refresh the page
- Click Refresh the application
- Or press Ctrl + F5 on the keyboard

Open email in a private/incognito window
This starts a clean browser session.

Try a different web browser
If the issue continues, try another browser:
- Microsoft Edge
- Google Chrome
- Firefox

Restart the device
- Restart the computer or Chromebook
- Open a browser and try Outlook again
|

Check internet connection
- If using school Wi‑Fi, reconnect and try again
- If at home, restart the router or try another network if available

Still Having Issues
If the issue is not resolved after completing all steps:
- Check the System Status page and see "Exchange Online" for service outages.
- Staff or Students: If the outage details don’t match the listed problems, please reach out to the IT Helpdesk.
Include the following if possible:
- Screenshot of the error
- Time the error occurred
- Device and browser being used
Cause
This issue is typically caused by a temporary connection problem between the web browser and Microsoft’s email servers.
Common causes include:
- Temporary Microsoft service issues
- Corrupted browser cache or session
- Network filtering or firewall interference
- Browser extensions blocking required content
The issue usually resolves by refreshing the session or using a private browser window.
