Microsoft License Error - How to Fix It

Body

Task:

If you see a message stating there is an issue with your Microsoft license, don’t worry—this usually does not mean your license is missing or inactive. In most cases, your license is already active and just needs a quick refresh.  Occasionally, Microsoft apps temporarily lose their connection to your account. When this happens, the app may display a license message even though your access is working correctly.

You may see a message in a Microsoft app (such as Outlook, Teams, Word, or Excel) indicating:

  • A license error
  • That Microsoft needs you to sign in
  • That your account can’t be verified

This article walks you through the simple steps to resolve the issue.

Signing out and signing back in refreshes your account connection and usually resolves the issue.

Follow these steps:

  1. Open the Microsoft app where you see the error.
  2. In the top-right corner, select your profile picture.
  3. Choose Sign out.
  4. Close the application completely.
  5. Reopen the app and sign back in using your Microsoft account.

After signing back in, the license message should no longer appear.

If the Issue Continues

If you still see the error after completing the steps above, please contact the IT Service Desk for further assistance.

Additional Notes

  • No license changes are required for this issue.
  • This is a common and temporary sign-in issue.
  • Restarting the app after signing out is important to complete the fix.
